I really want a thoroughbred, bay would be awesome. I’m also looking at brown and white paints. I really want a green horse, so I can spend time training them the way I like from the ground up.

Trust me, it didn’t come easily! I’ve always been the kind of person to switch from one thing to another, and so when my parents realized that riding is something I’ve always loved and will continue to love they really started taking a second look at the options.

Honestly though, what really convinced them is the amount of time I’ve spent in the hospital and in physical therapy because of poorly behaved lesson horses. They understand that injury and mistakes are a lot less likely to occur (but still not rare) when you’ve got your own horse, simply because there’s a stronger trusting relationship. What got my mom was when I landed in the hospital because a mean lesson horse kicked in the face with his back hoof. She wants me to be able to build a relationship with the horse I ride, not just practice during lessons on him.

The first month I own my horse will be spent mostly on groundwork and bareback riding, I need to build a relationship with my horse before I push him over 3’ jumps. My parents understand that now, and they didn’t before. 

Plus the barn I take lessons at is really far away and they got tired of driving me, and my instructor isn’t pushing me hard enough so that had a lot to do with it as well.
